—man sets ex-girlfriend alight
Police have revealed that 21-year-old Kyle Goddett, who is believed to be the prime suspect in the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend, Susanna Culpepper, was turned in yesterday afternoon by his parents. Goddett reportedly escaped from police custody last Saturday, while he was detained at the Charity Police station.
Reports indicate that sometime around 03:00 hrs on Saturday morning, the young man set ablaze his ex-girlfriend, Culpepper. The young woman told police that on Friday evening last, she slept at the home of her current boyfriend, Chavez Watson. The young woman said that she and Chavez retired to bed, leaving the louvre pane windows opened in the bedroom. The couple was awakened by a burning sensation, as they looked around, they quickly realised that the bed was on fire.
Goddett was later seen by Watson fleeing the premises. Culpeper was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital, with burns to the face, both hands stomach and feet.
Kaieteur News understands that Susanna ended an abusive relationship with the suspect, a few months prior to the attack. The victim’s sister said that Susanna once lived in the Pomeroon with Goddett for about a year. She described the relationship however, as being very abusive.
Her sister added, “He used to beat her but she never speak out about it. One time the two of them came out to Charity where they were drinking. Later, we got a call that he [Goddett] hit her and chopped her face with a bottle.”
Ever since that incident, the victim’s mother Cheryl Benn separated her daughter from the abusive young man.
Family members told Kaieteur News, that Susanna is now in the Burns Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital, on the way to recovery.
Commander of ‘G’ Division, Khali Pareshram, said that a file has been prepared and would be forwarded to the capital city, Georgetown, seeking further advice on the case.
