Dear Editor,
I wish to be a part of the conversation about the selection of the very aged New GECOM Chairman. In this stead, I congratulate our President for being bold in making such a move.
My issue is that from observation, I have noticed many CEO’s and heads of organization are male, are over the age of 60-65 and that seems okay.
On the other hand, we have competent women who are equally qualified and healthy, who find it difficult to attain those jobs or even be accepted for advertised positions.
Once they interview you, and recognize that you are over 60, your chances are diminished in being employed. There is talk that some government organizations prefer to have younger females who may not have the experience but let us be very wary of this as “Weinsteinism” can be a present danger at every organization.
Can we address this and not let this appear to be the “male dominated” world. No longer are women eagerly looking forward to retiring and staying home to knit, watch soap operas, gardening and tend to grand children. We are willing to work beyond the age of 60 and should be given that opportunity.
We have been using and quoting North America as an example for many things, therefore we should also take all aspects of their norms; take Britain for example they have Theresa May who is 61 years old and Germany has Angela Merkel, who is 63 years of age, not forgetting the USA senate has at least 12 women who are above the age of 60 and still serving excellently.
Even though it is not nice to mention but is necessary, according to UNICEF the Life Expectancy rate between males and females have shown that women out live our male counterpart by approximately 10 years, so what could be the reason for reemploying older men and not women also?
Let us take a page out of the book and extend those jobs to women who have experience and knowledge and who wish to continue to make strides in Guyana as they continue nurturing and being the softer side of our growing population.
Also we should stop calling women “mamie” and the men are not called “dadie”. Let us go back to Sir, Madam, Mr. Thomas, Ms. Smart and not Ms. June. We are looking to attract tourists, let us speak properly.
