Dear Editor,
Almost a week ago, I received a message that read “Good night, Comrade Nestor, Comrade Garrett passed away today”. At first, I was in denial but a second message came from another individual, and his message confirmed my fears. It was Mr. Garrett, “the PNC man from Campbellville Housing Scheme.”
Junior Garrett was a true comrade. I met Junior Garrett many years ago, when I became very active in the PNCR youth arm. We campaigned alongside each other in many internal and national elections. Mr. Garrett fits into that group of dedicated party members whose diligent work can easily go unnoticed. Their contributions are not posted on bill boards, nor placards. Garrett’s party work may not have been in the “loud and amplified category” but it certainly was in the important column. He was the kind of activist who worked daily to build the party. Group activism was key. He was a comrade who was present both “in season” and “out of season.” His kind of party work concentrated mainly on stabilizing the foundation of the party and enhancing its structure. His many years of valuable contribution to the PNCR cannot, and must not go unnoticed. His unselfish and relentless support for party work traces back many years.
Junior Garrett was a fearless advocate of his party and a worthy, committed and reliable campaigner. He would pull out all the stops to get the mission accomplished. I recall that while campaigning during a National Election Mr. Garrett met me at Congress Place and asked that I commit some time to his area of responsibility. His exact words were “Lurlene, we got to get some more energy on the ground here”. Without any hesitation, I committed. He made himself available and campaigned passionately. Comrade Garrett aided the exercise with all the resources needed to get the work done. This was a natural for him, as he always made his resources available to the party.
Junior Garrett was a true friend of the GYSM (Guyana Youth and Student Movement) and its members. When I served in the leadership of the GYSM there was a group of donors the GYSM could have called upon at any time, for assistance. Mr. Garrett was one of those people. He gave unselfishly to help the GYSM to promote its agenda. His contribution helped to support youth camps, leadership retreats, sporting activities and many fund raising events. This was his way of supporting the party’s youth. Many of us enjoyed his company and were able to see his most funny side. Yes, Mr. Garrett was one of the most hilarious people I have known, his politics was serious but his “other side” was amusingly hilarious. For many of us who knew Junior Garrett there is one thing that we could never forget and that is the way he makes you laugh. The way he makes your frustration and anger dissipate without you even noticing. There was never a dull moment with Cde. Garrett. He was a spark of laughter for many of us who had to confront the many experiences of losing multiple elections. In those moments his hilarious spin made things lighter.
Junior Garret was a PNCR stalwart and a Guyanese Patriot. He served at every opportunity. His role at the Georgetown City Council was important to him; it was a job he took seriously. His interest and work in the PNCR has left a permanent mark. His love for his party was so deep that he volunteered his premises to hold group meetings. Councilor Garrett was the embodiment of a good person. He was kind and personable. His personality was infectious. I enjoyed his camaraderie; I appreciated his support throughout the years. The PNCR has lost a true political warrior. His contribution and support for my work will remain with me forever. I was grateful to have known Mr. Garrett, his frank views and criticisms were always helpful. He was a genuine person.
Sincere condolences to his family, I trust that you take comfort in the fact that Comrade Garrett has made his contribution on earth. I hope that his funny side continues to be a memory that makes you smile.
May his soul rest in peace.
Lurlene Nestor
