Investigators are still to send samples of what is believed to be human bones, teeth and hair for DNA testing, following the disappearance of 63-year-old farmer, Bisundial Vasquez. The remains were discovered on a farm at Silicone Green, Kuru Kuru, on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway seven months ago.
The remains were to be sent for DNA testing in June, last to confirm whether the remains, which were found on the farm, are that of Vasquez. He was taking care of the said farm when he went missing.
Kaieteur News was informed that the remains which were discovered is still at the lab along with the samples taken from Vasquez’s relative.
It is unclear why the samples have not been sent off as yet since the Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan, had said last year that Guyana is benefiting from free DNA testing from neighbouring Brazil.
The father of four went missing after an alleged break-in at the farm in May, last. The owner of the farm had suggested to the police that the elderly man might have taken the stolen items which included a boat engine and fled.
However, after the man did not show up or try to make contact with his children, they made a missing person report and subsequently went to the farm to search for him or any clues that would lead to them finding their father.
On their first visit, Vasquez’s daughter, Hema Mattan, said that they found her father’s slippers, a shovel and bag next to a creek, a short distance from the shack in which the farmer was living.
Kaieteur News was informed that on their second visit to the farm, they were accompanied by ranks from Timehri Police Station. It was during this visit that ranks searched a burnt heap next to the creek and discovered the human remains.
They also discovered a marijuana farm about 10 miles from where the human remains were found. It is suspected that the murder is linked to the marijuana farm, but this is yet to be confirmed. Reports are that the caretaker would usually bathe at the creek.
If indeed the remains are that of Vasquez, it would mean that the 63-year-old man was killed while on the camp and his killer(s) used the jute bag to take the body to the creek where they burnt it.
Reshma Bisundial, another daughter of the caretaker, said that her father had made contact with her early in March, when he informed her that he was heading to work.
The elderly man would usually spend about three months at the farm before returning to his Friendship, East Bank Demerara home to spend about a week with his family.
