A labourer and a father of five is currently hospitalised with a broken arm, internal bleeding and some other injuries at the Skeldon Public Hospital after he was struck down by a police constable along the Number 72 Public Road.
Chandrapaul ‘Mahesh’ Budhwa would have been another victim of a hit and run if residents did not intervene by stopping the driver of motorcar PMM 7653 driven at the time by Constable Michael Saul. This is according to an eyewitness. Saul was reportedly speeding when he struck Budhwa and sped away. He was stopped by villagers a short distance from the point of impact.
Mother-in-law of the victim, Kamlawattie Madoo detailed that they were crossing the public road when the unfortunate incident took place.
“Me, meh son-in-law and meh daughter was crossing over the road and me bin reach over. This car bin deh far and me na know when this car come so quick and he drive and knock he and he fall down”, Madoo said.
She added that after hitting her son-in-law, the driver sped off. “He gone and then dem bai run go behind he and catch he”.
Shamdai ‘Sattie’ Behari, a domestic worker and wife of the injured man, seemed extremely worried. There was a look of dismay and confusion on her face as she explained that her husband does odd jobs around the village to support her and their five children, aged nine to eighteen.
She stated that they are very poor and the accident has left her wondering where or how she and the children will get by without any finances coming in the home.
“Me husband deh in hospital and ah he use to mine we. Me does do one or two wuk around the village when me get but me husband use to bring money home and now me got to look am because he can’t walk. He seh half of he body feel numb and he hand bruk. You na see meh children guh suffer?”
She said that before the accident occurred, she was also crossing the road with Budhwa and her mother but she made it to the other side and her husband was left a short distance away when the car hit him.
“When me hear, blam, me fall and get blackout”, Behari stated.
Meanwhile, villagers and eyewitnesses are claiming that after the policeman hit the victim and was subsequently stopped, he refused to take the injured Budhwa to the hospital even though his vehicle was not damaged. Instead, he told them, “Uncle, uncle me na wrong.”
A relative eventually picked up the injured labourer and took him to the Skeldon Public Hospital where he was admitted.
The family of the injured also revealed that they are willing to accept compensation since the court process will cost them.
The vehicle is currently impounded at the Springlands Police Station and the accused is said to be at work, as usual.
Investigations are ongoing.
