Two men were yesterday committed to stand trial at the High Court in Georgetown for the murder of Leopold Street resident Rawle Rodrigues, who was stabbed in the chest, during the course of a robbery at Stabroek Market.
Afibia Yankana, 27 of Hadfield Street and Akeem Haymer, are accused of the capital offence.
It is alleged that the two men on January 20, 2017 at Croal Street, Georgetown, murdered Rodrigues, during the course of a robbery.
At the conclusion of the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) yesterday, Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman ruled that there was sufficient evidence against the two accused for them to stand trial before a judge and jury at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.
The Magistrate said that at the conclusion of the prosecution’s case which was presented by Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves, she was satisfied with the evidence led by the witnesses and that their evidence was not discredited.
She added that based on the entirety of the evidence, in her opinion, a prima facie case has been established against the two accused men for the aforesaid murder.
According to reports, Rodrigues, 43 of Lot 64 Leopold Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, was in the vicinity of the Dairy, Parfaite Harmonie bus park at around 21:30 hrs, when he was attacked by three robbers. One of the men stabbed him in the chest.
Reports indicated that the father of three was waiting for a minibus when he was robbed of his iPhone before being stabbed to death.
Rodrigues was subsequently rushed to the Georgetown Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
