A man and his wife who left their home and business located at Lot 3 Clifton Village, Corentyne, Berbice for an evening out, returned to it totally engulfed in flames Thursday night.
Krishna Persaud, 50, says he operated a general store, mechanic shop and auto sales at his Clifton address.
He explained that he received a phone call sometime around 1:30 am from someone informing him that his home was on fire.
“We were at another house about a mile away when I got the call, so when we arrived my wife collapsed. The house was already completely burnt so after my wife got blackout and I rushed her to the hospital,” Persaud said.
The fire service was already battling the blaze when he turned up at the scene.
Neighbours reported that the fire began in the upper flat of the two-storeyed concrete edifice.
The businessman is estimating nearly $80M in losses
Investigations into the fire are ongoing.
