Soon farms at Wisroc, in Linden, and Kimbia in the Berbice River will be able to operate more sustainably and efficiently with the installation of Solar power, according to Regional Chairman, Rennis Morian.
He held detailed discussions with officials from the Office of Climate Change on this initiative.
Morian said that he shared with the officials that the Region is working very hard to improve agriculture production in Region Ten, since the Region still does not enjoy food security.
“I am happy to announce that there is a co-operative society on the Rockstone Road aback of Wisroc that has just registered about twenty-five farmers who are managing about nine hundred acres.”
He added that his discourse with the Climate Change Office centered mostly on farmers obtaining solar power. He said that this will enable them to do small scale processing, access water from the nearby Creek to their location and provide proper cold storage for their produce.
Morian added that he has completed the concept note for the project and this would be forwarded to the Climate Change Office.
The Regional Chairman said that Kimbia was also included in the discourse as this community is also moving to expand agriculture.
He reminded that Kimbia was once noted as the greatest producer of red peas and lentils among other produce in the Berbice River.
But unfortunately the boat that was used to transport produce to New Amsterdam was sold by the previous administration.
This has negatively affected the sustainability of agriculture in the area, but in the Region’s quest to promote agriculture once more, Morian says that he would also be working to establish solar electricity in that community.
