“Police in this country are here to protect people not harass them”. Those were the sentiments uttered by a fuming relative of a man, whose leg was reportedly crushed by a police pick-up attached to the Rose Hall Outpost.
Inderjeet Ramjit, 40, a part-time livestock farmer and maintenance worker attached to the Albion Estate is currently hospitalised with a broken right leg.
Accusations have been levelled against ranks from Rose Hall Outpost who, on Sunday, at approximately 11:30 hrs, were patrolling the Albion, Topoo area.
Ramjit is claiming that he had just ridden out on his motorcycle from the Albion backlands after cutting grass for his livestock and was heading home when the incident took place.
“I went and cut li’l grass and was coming out and I see dem police driving coming and then slam into my bike. Dem na even blow pon meh or nothing. I fall down on the bike and then dem drive over meh one foot,” the man claimed. His foot is now in a cast.
He stated that the police vehicle stopped and two female ranks, who were sitting at the back passenger seat allegedly shouted: “Hoist he and throw him in the back of the jeep. Don’t bother with he, he playing tricks”.
“I had on long boots and I take it out and show dem meh foot bruck. Dem throw me at the back of the vehicle and left meh bike and so right deh and dem carry me to Port Mourant Hospital and left meh deh,” the farmer said.
Nurses eventually made contact with Ramjit’s relatives and informed them that he was hospitalised. He was subsequently transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he is awaiting surgery. Relatives stated that they were told by doctors that “he got to get steel and plate in the leg”.
The police account, however, of the incident differs. Divisional Commander, Lyndon Alves explained that the report given by the ranks stated that “they were on patrol going south in Topoo village. Ramjit was riding in the same direction when the police alleged that they attempted to overtake the motorcycle when the handle hit the right side of the vehicle fender, causing him to fall on the ground. The motorcycle then fell on him.”
Alves, however, noted that the matter will be investigated as a normal traffic accident. The relatives on the other hand, are yet to locate the motorcycle the police left at the scene.
“How could you leave the man’s belongings there without anyone to look after it?” a cousin of Ramjit questioned.
