Vedenand Hardeo Rupa, aka ‘Shuga’, who was fatally struck down along the Number 71 Public Road by a speeding 25-year-old Keith Griffith, died from a fractured spine and haemorrhage. The examination which was conducted some time last week was executed by a government pathologist.
Griffith has since been released on station bail and his vehicle bearing licence plate number HC 6790 has also been released. The file was also sent for advice to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Hardeo Rupa, of Number 69 Village, was on his way home on his bicycle when motorcar HC 6790 reportedly driven by Keith Griffith of Tarlogie Village, Corentyne, Berbice slammed into the rear of the cycle, hurling his body several feet in the air before landing on the windscreen of the car.
The car and pedal cyclist were proceeding north along the western carriageway with the cyclist in the lead when it was alleged that the car which was speeding, struck the bicycle from the rear. As a result of the impact, the cyclist fell onto the road surface and sustained injuries. He was taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A blood alcohol level test was conducted on the driver and the results reportedly showed that Griffith had no alcohol in his system. A policeman was also reportedly in the car at the time of the accident.
Relatives had stated, that the crowd gathered at the scene, were furious after they noticed that the driver of the car was sitting in a police pick-up at the scene for approximately three hours without a breathalyzer test being done. He was reportedly fed by the police as they claimed they were waiting on the breathalyzer machine.
“Dem gee him (Griffith) juice, food and water, dem people start to fight and shout that he got to come out. Nearly three hours he (Rupa) lie down on the road. Dem do the breathalyzer test three hours after the accident. This thing happen like around 6:30 and dem do the test till 9:00. The man eat bellyful and then dem test he,” an angry relative disclosed.
Residents and relatives opined that the police were dragging their foot at the scene, “Like dem binna cover for this bai who knock down Rupa because why dem had to take so long to do breathalyzer test? Why dem ah tek so long fuh charge he?”
