Dear Editor,
A Sergeant of police attached to Anna Regina Station presumptuously refused to charge a young man against whom a report was made for using threatening language to me twice on the same day. He used these words, “I am going to shoot you”. He then returned shortly afterwards to say “I am going to kill you”.
At the time I was plying my trade as a ground provision vendor at the Cotton Field market while tending to a female customer and after becoming ever so much scared did not hesitate to make the report.
The offender who apparently was born in New York and has an American accent was at the market place recently in company of his grandmother who lives just aback of my home at Hibernia Village in Region Two when he committed the offence.
Some time ago, I had a problem with the grandmother. It caused me to sense that he was out to harm me and feared for my life.
The police promptly arrested the young man from whom a statement was taken. I gave one as well but much to my surprise the officer made it known to me that he could not institute a charge because he did not have evidence to do so.
No dissatisfaction would have been expressed by me had a Magistrate adjudicated in the matter and found that the evidence was insufficient.
The grandmother had spent almost an hour in the Sergeant’s Office and since money can do wonders, it could well have been used to defeat the course of justice.
In my presence, The Deputy Commander for the division had instructed the sergeant to charge the man for using threatening language to me but this was not done from insubordination in a disciplined service.
With thanks,
Yours faithfully,
BODH NARINE
