Cadet Officer Franz Paul who is accused of shooting a 15-year-old boy in the mouth is still to call his final witness in his defence. It is alleged that on April 30, 2014 at Georgetown, Franz Paul discharged a loaded firearm at Alex Griffith, who was 15-year-old at the time, with intent to maim, disable, disfigure or cause him grievous bodily harm.
It is also alleged that on the same day, Franz Paul inflicted grievous bodily harm on, and assaulted the teenager.
The accused, who was charged since in 2014, has been released on High Court bail with respect to both matters.
Paul who is being represented by Attorney-at-law, Roger Yearwood is currently leading a defence in the matter. Last year August, the lawyer had told the court that a doctor would be the final witness to testify on behalf of his client.
That witness Dr. Yogeshwar Singh who is attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, testified on October 18, 2017. However, the lawyer has since indicated that he would be calling one more witness to testify on behalf of his client. But that witness is not in the jurisdiction.
When the matter came up earlier this month, Yearwood told the court that the witness was not in the jurisdiction. According to the lawyer, he informed the witness that his absence has been stalling the case.
After acknowledging that the court has been very lenient in granting several adjournments, Yearwood begged for another adjournment, promising that the witness will be there to testify.
Magistrate Azore granted the lawyer’s request insisting that February 2, will be the final adjournment date.
According to reports, Franz Paul’s sister, Nadia Paul, was robbed on April 30, 2014.
Thereafter, the Cadet Officer reportedly took her to the police station to make a formal report of the incident. Based on information received, Griffith was later arrested by a party of policemen headed by Franz Paul. It was during the process that the Cadet Officer allegedly discharged a loaded firearm in the teen’s mouth. During an identification parade held at the Brickdam Police Station, Griffith positively identified his alleged shooter as Franz Paul.
