Residents from areas between Albion and Tain Village, Corentyne, will experience some water interruptions after it was revealed that one of the two main wells that supply the Port Mourant plant of the Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) has failed.
Director of Operations, Dwayne Shako, disclosed that the pump station supplies the Port Mourant water treatment plant between Albion and Tain.
He stated that over the past few days, there were some major setbacks in one of the wells that supply the plant.
“The plant has failed; we are not having water but rather mud. We suspect that the entire casing of the well has collapsed”.
Shako explained that some preliminary investigations were conducted. These revealed that the casing of the well may have ruptured.
“We are not able to sustain the plant. Areas such as Rose Hall Town, Belvedere, Tain, Albion (some parts), Nigg and Portuguese Quarter (Port Mourant) will be affected,” Shako divulged.
The problem will affect the regular supply of water. The supply will be reduced to three to four hours a day for approximately two weeks to facilitate repairs.
According to the Operations Director, GWI is trying to provide the life-saving substance from other sources. Tain, Corentyne will receive from Letter Kenny while some sections of Nigg Village will get a supply from Albion. Rose Hall Town and Belvedere are the areas that will mostly feel the brunt of the problem since the water company are unable to provide water to those areas from the Albion and Letter Kenny wells.
In addition to the collapsed plant, it was also highlighted that there has been a power issue resulting in the fluctuation of the pump operation. He stated that the Guyana Power and Light is currently experiencing network issues which have compounded the problems at GWI.
He is appealing to residents to exercise patience as the technicians at the Guyana Water Incorporated remedy the issue in an efficient manner.
“We are working to activate another well to interconnect into the system where we are able to give water to Rose Hall, Nigg and Portuguese Quarter. With the well in activation, they will not receive water at first flow level just at the standpipe level but a constant supply,” Shako assured.
Over the past few days, residents of several areas along the Corentyne have complained of water problems. The pressure of the water has dropped, some said, while others complained that they receive only a few hours of supply.
GWI has apologised for the inconvenience caused as they work to rectify the problem.
