Dear Editor,
Given the recent violence in Venezuela, their attitude to our border and the criminal excursions occurring in and out of the country that affect our citizens with Venezuelans involvement, we must as a country be VERY CLEAR that they are no longer welcomed or invited to be a part of our journey to the good life until they can contain, control and eliminate the criminal element within their society.
Blatant disregard and disrespect for their own citizens, much less our fellow Guyanese should send a clear message to our fellow citizens that Enough is Enough and it is no longer business as usual. Business dealings with Venezuelans should be significantly curtailed.
We do not need their problems and poor behaviour within our borders, and enabling our Country’s declared enemy should be considered criminal. It is time we seriously reconsider our diplomatic relationship and the role of our representatives.
The recall of our citizens from Venezuela should be discussed to ensure their safety. Such an act if implemented should be until all controversial matters have been resolved and Venezuela demonstrates its ability to continually obey the rule of international law.
The military needs to also seriously consider securing the border and strengthening their bases to prevent the overflow of the criminal element into Guyana. It is becoming clear that the Venezuelan citizens are living in a failed democracy where violence is taking over all corners of their society. Colombia recently saw a huge influx of Venezuelans by its border.
I am sorry, but we need to focus on Helping our laid off sugar workers with the limited resources (including our medical supplies) we currently have.
At this time we Guyanese must become more internally focused and ensure we continue to find ways to uplift our fellow citizens out of poverty and crime. Yes, this means Guyana for Guyanese. Ensuring the elimination and purging of such bad influences from Venezuela, as seen in recent events, occurs quickly and permanently until there is a clear change. It is my hope that the security initiatives we have signed onto with the United Kingdom is pursued aggressively in the near term, thus, ensuring improved national security and protection for all of our citizens in every region.
Best regards,
Jamil Changlee
