The government is keen on capacity building. This is particularly so in the petroleum sector. At least that is according to the Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman. This is what he recently told Members of the National Assembly.
Trotman said, “The Government of Guyana, with support from its many partners, seeks to build the capacity of our policy makers, officers, technicians, private sector professionals and all stakeholders on the issues and challenges surrounding this emerging sector.”
The Minister said that the scholarship needs that the Ministry has identified are in the areas of Petroleum Engineering, Data Management, Petroleum Economics, Risk Management and Reservoir Engineering.
Trotman said that for the benefit of the Petroleum Department of the Ministry as well and the unborn Petroleum Commission, the Ministry intends to capitalise on short, medium and long-term training programmes.
“The Government of Guyana recognises the need for a highly skilled workforce in this sector and as such, we are investing in building this capacity,” said Trotman.
The Minister told his parliamentary colleagues that the government has already begun the process in working with the Oil Companies and the Mexican Embassy on accessing scholarship opportunities.
“Meanwhile, we are building our capacity within the Ministry as technical officers are given the opportunity to attend capacity building workshops, seminars, mentoring exchanges and conferences etc,” said Trotman.
He continued, “For the year ahead, the MNR [Ministry of Natural Resources] will focus on the creation of promotional and educational material to provide current and relevant information on Guyana’s basins, local content development and investment opportunities. This will see the development of brochures and website content.”
Trotman said that the Ministry is aiming to participate in many international conferences to promote Guyana’s emerging petroleum sector. He also told the House that Guyana will be hosting its first Oil and Gas Exhibition in the first quarter of this year.
Trotman said that at that event, the Ministry we will have an opportunity to showcase Guyana’s potential and attract international companies for future investment opportunities.
