Amidst growing concerns over the garbage build-up in the city, Solid Waste Collector, Cevon’s Waste Management has noted their contention over the stance taken by the Georgetown Mayor and City Council in renewing their contract.
According to a statement from the company, City Hall has not taken any steps to renew its contract, despite the solid waste issue facing the city.
Earlier this year, the council had announced that they could no longer afford to sustain the service of private operators Cevon’s and Puran Brothers Waste Disposal. The two companies therefore, withdrew their services citing non payment of bills amounting to over $300 million.
But with a heavy and concentrated level of garbage in the city, Central Government was forced to step in to aid City Hall with the bill.
Over the past month the companies had been collecting garbage under the purview of the central government. However, the arrangement under which the Government of Guyana financed the garbage disposal services to the capital came to an end on December 31, 2017.
The Company in the statement noted that there exists no contractual arrangement between Cevon’s Waste Management and the Georgetown Municipality for garbage collection since August 2017.
“Further, it has not been our company’s impression that City Hall had made any serious effort to use the November 27 – December 31 period to seek re-engagement with its long-term garbage collection contractors, namely Cevon’s Waste Management and Puran Brothers.
Indeed, and up until Sunday December 31, City Hall found reason to set aside such opportunities as arose out of inquiries by our company to meet in an effort to arrive at a workable arrangement that would put behind us the unacceptable status quo that had attended the previous arrangement.”
The Waste Management Company nonetheless stated that it stands altogether prepared to continue to serve the capital in the manner that it has done for several years.
“Cevon’s Waste Management stands ready at a moment’s notice to meet with the relevant City officials to engage in discourse that would result in a new agreement for garbage disposal that would be both reassuring and binding on the parties concerned.
We believe, however, the objective observers would understand, even embrace our position that it is altogether undesirable to provide the service which it does under conditions which, just recently, resulted in much difficulty for our capital.”
