– forced to do domestic work to survive
A feeble 73-year-old pain-riddled man is pleading for the relevant authorities to give an ear as he has been for the past 14 years fighting with the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) for the money that he, by law, is entitled.
Nathan Craig, 73, of Linden, said he has been running back and forth with the NIS for what rightfully belongs to him.
In explaining the situation the man presented documents showing the contributions that he made to the Government and what he is entitled to.
Craig said, “I work long. Is a long time now I waiting to get this money and like nobody not doing nothing. I went to the NIS building in Linden. All they got is nice face and nice smile. They not doing anything for anybody.”
The frustrated man told Kaieteur News that he survives on the Old Age Pension that the government gives on a monthly basis, but this, however, is unable to cover all the expenses.
He added, “Me wife even leff me”.
To meet his expenses the man said that he has been doing domestic work for people in the area.
The pensioner further complained that he made 1013 contributions, while he worked with three different companies. Craig stated that when he visited the NIS, he was informed that he only qualifies for 774, but never received an explanation as to why.
While venting frustration again, Mr. Craig said, “Me family does support me sometimes, but I worked hard for me money and I have to get what I work for before I dead”.
