With Christmas just eight days away, stall holders at both the Mackenzie and Wismar Markets are complaining that business is still slow despite the fast approaching big day.
There has however been a slight increase in traffic through the two facilities, so vendors remain optimistic that sales will improve as Christmas draws closer.
One vendor observed, “more persons are passing through the market yes, but most of them are just window shopping only a few are actually buying. However we’re not giving up, hopefully things will improve for the new week.”
Over the past few years, the last few days before Christmas is when the shopping fever gets really contagious in Linden, culminating in a last minute shopping frenzy on Christmas Eve.
But business persons have always complained that most persons travel to Georgetown to shop.
“We’re well stocked but yet people running to town to shop, when they could get a lot of things right here,” one vendor complained.
Residents on the other hand argue that the prices in Linden are sometimes too high, hence their choice to shop in Georgetown.
“We don’t have a problem shopping here but they (business persons) have to make their prices competitive, ” Nicole exclaimed.
Late shopping
Many business places in Linden open their doors as late as midnight on Christmas Eve to accommodate the influx of shoppers and cash in on the last minute sales. Many of these shoppers come from areas as far away as Malali, which is located about forty five miles up the Demerara River and Dora and Adventure, down the Linden Soesdyke Highway. They of course jostle with residents who are also caught up in the last minute shopping excitement.
