In addition to a long list of charitable ventures, the Beacon Foundation on Thursday opened the doors of its Thomas and New Market Streets hospice to the public.
According to co-founder of the organization, Clairmonte Lye, the open house was to officially introduce members of the public to the new wing of the hospice.
The hostel will serve to accommodate out- of -town women and children requiring cancer treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Lye noted that the foundation has been providing services to cancer patients for a number of years, including counseling for the terminally ill.
“We decided to expand our services to providing a place to stay for women and children travelling from far-reaching places like Berbice to stay while they receive radiotherapy at GPHC.”
The hospital is located just a short distance from the Beacon Hostel, making it convenient to those staying there.
“We opened up the hostel, so that they can stay over the night. We also have a live in matron to cook for them,” Lye added
He noted that in its 32 years of existence, the Beacon Foundation has been quietly involved in a number of projects including medical clinics, street children rehabilitation programmes, the support for women‘s programme , and the renovation of the GPHC pediatric ward.
Additionally, the Beacon Foundation was involved in many successful ventures such as providing daily meals for up to 100 street dwellers, involvement in diverse projects such as well-drilling in the North West District; handicraft courses for Indigenous women; an emergency feeding programme for Rupununi school children; remedial education for street children; a refurbished pediatric ward in Georgetown; and peanut and rice cultivation programmes in the Rupununi.
The Beacon Foundation was founded in 1985. As well as paying the wages of up to 100 employees, the entity puts all the profits from its food catering operations to fund many charitable programmes.
As such, the foundation prides itself as perhaps being the only totally self-sustaining charitable organization in the country.
The organization’s School Feeding Programme has continued through the years, with the Ann’s Grove Primary School programme having reached twenty-seven years in existence.
With some assistance from the private sector, over 200 children in different schools continue to benefit from this initiative on school days.
