Dear Editor,
Former shadow minister of foreign affairs for 23 years in the opposition benches and now the real deal in the coalition, Carl Greenidge, after admitting that he was the one who advised the President not to alert the nation of the 18 million signing bonus collected from Exxon has assumed a new portfolio-PRO Exxon Guyana. Greenidge, making reference to KN said”The company broke no law, owes no taxes but you run a campaign that the company is not trustworthy,” He further asserted that
Exxon Mobil broke no law as yet in Guyana and as such, should be left alone and that the company’s track record has no relevance here.”
These adumbrations are definitely PR in nature! Greenidge seems to be a product of the old school when the world of telecommunication was a barren waste land; by the time one hears something it was history. So you are constantly stuck in a reactive mode. That is the quintessential
undoing of the coalition government. They lack the temerity to be proactive. Information and Communication
Technology has made the world a tiny place. To say that a Company’s track record has no relevance here Is considered as misinformation in this era, where leader in business and governance are expected to be proactive thinkers. Track records should be looked as a Company’s CV; something not popular with this Government.
The fact that ninety five percent of what KN published about Exxon’s tact and guile or track record already existed in electronic archive and could be easily accessed by anyone, anywhere in the world who wanted to know, might be perceived as an alien concept to Mr Greenidge. KN is simply doing its moral duty to pass “known information” to the people of Guyana. Enlightening us, since oil and gas is
new to us and it was presumed that the Government, having lamented the need for transparency and accountability in its election campaign, would have held wide consultation with the masses and opposition before engaging Exxon with negotiations for a EIA and PSA. Oil is the future of Guyana
and it was important to get it right the first time. There might never be a second chance.
Exxon, like all companies are profit oriented and naturally do whatever it takes to maximize their profits. In their quest they know their deeds will follow them like “karma”.
I have not seen them denouncing anything about their modus operandi published by KN. In such light I would not want to believe that anyone from Exxon said anything to Greenidge about “KN’s scrutiny”. Maybe he was just being reactive to a “figment of his imagination” when he said, “Y’all down the road cussing them out, (saying that) they are terrible, who they ain’t rob, they put money in somebody’s account and the president spend it. What does that have to do with the company?” That is exactly the point!
I figure the people from Exxon must have already called to tell him to desist from such foolish ramblings. Unlike him, the people at Exxon are smart and proactive. They know when you are faced with the ugly truth, you have two choices; try to debunk it as a lie and get more criticism or stay silent and watch it dissipate with time. Exxon was doing fine until Greenidge inadvertently came by, primarily for support
of the secrecy of the signing bonus and pretentiously or diversionary as Exxon PRO.
Noting prepares you for the next comment from our top diplomat-”many of those who talk transparency, their activities won’t see the light of day.”You can’t have a more vivid picture of where the coalition planned on taking this country. I am going back to England.
