The Guyana Badminton Association & Banks DIH LTD Powerade & Aqua Mist Christmas Badminton Singles Tournament 2017 started on Friday last at the National Gymnasium and concludes today.
The tournament is being played in the Men & Ladies Open Singles and the Juniors Under-11, 15 & 17 Singles categories. One of the highlights of the day was talented junior Priyanna Ramdhani getting the better of her father and coach, Gokarn Ramdhani in straight games.
The Results on the opening night were:
Open Men Singles First Rounds:
William Holder defeated Johann Waldron: 21-9, 21-6
Gokarn Ramdhani defeated Mahendra Sharma: 21-8, 21-5
Nicholas Waldron defeated Isaac Mallampati: 21-5, 21-9
Open Men Singles Second Rounds:
Tyrese Jeffrey defeated Haymant Ramdhani: 21-5, 21-7
Akili Haynes defeated Nicholas Bullen: 21-16, 21-7
Ronald Chang Yuen defeated William Holder: 21-9, 21-13
Darrell Carpenay defeated Nicholas Waldron: 21-9, 21-7
Junior National Player Priyanna Ramdhani defeated her Father & Coach Gokarn Ramdhani: 21-17, 21-6 (Priyanna Ramdhani was allowed to play in the Men Singles as there was not much competition for her in the Ladies Singles so as to keep up her form).
Open Men Singles Quarter-Finals:
Jonathan Mangra defeated Shekhar Mallampati: 21-6, 21-2
Ronald Chang Yuen defeated Junior National Player Akili Haynes in a three setter: 21-14, 9-21, 10-21.
Marlon Chung defeated Junior National Player in a thrilling three setter with M. Chung losing the first game at 22-24 and came back and take the other two games at: 21-19, 21-19.
Play of the Day was when Priyanna Ramdhani defeated senior player Darrell Carpenay in a thrilling three setter with D. Carpenay taking the first game at 21-14 and Priyanna came back in the second game to set the Match at 14-21. She then took the last Game and Match at 14-21.
Ladies Open Semi Finals:
Priyanna Ramdhani defeated Ayana Wickham-Watson: 21-7, 21-2
Shivannie Persaud defeated Emelia Ramdhani: 21-17, 21-12
The Tournament continued yesterday and concludes today.
