The action heated up Thursday night at the Georgetown club as the Farfan and Mendes Junior Skill Level Tournament saw its third day of round robin competition. Highlight of the night came courtesy of Zachary Persaud and James Mekdeci in a breath-taking court battle.
It was evident from the get go that each player came to win and they traded point for point in the first two games; each earning an 11-9 win over the other. The third game saw James buckle down and stake his claim in a run of six points after a 2 all draw, before conceding one point and then taking the game at 11-3. Persaud started the fourth still shaky from the loss, allowing James a four point start, then countered to take a massive seven points of his own; rounding this game up eventually in his favour at 11-9. At two games a-piece James came out to dominate in the fifth, storming to an 11-3 final game. Every game of this match saw displays of long rallies, surprising determination and great skill from both players, with Mekdeci certainly earning his victory.
Also treating onlookers to a level of squash far beyond expected in category C were Jason Gomes and Louis Da Silva. Powerhouse Gomes met a calm determined DaSilva in a four game clash that shifted in each players favour in the first two games with Jason securing the wins, but saw Louis step up in the third and then Jason brought it home in the 4th to end 13-11, 12,-10, 8-11, 11-6.
Category D provided further excitement with most of the matches going to five games, but Chad DeAbreu secured his win, conceding only one game to Dhiren Persaud with a display of measured serves, killer drop shots and good length drives.
Spectators are anticipating continued thrills in the remaining days of the tournament which concludes tomorrow.
