Dear Editor,
Permit me a space in your newspaper to express my disappointment in some pseudo contractors who are bent on mischief.
As president of the P.T.A of St Rose’s High School and being fully exposed to government accounting systems, tender processes and most importantly, all the documents to demolish and re-construct the new school, I am saying without any reservation THIS SCHOOL CANNOT BE DEMOLISHED for eleven to fifteen million dollars.
First and foremost, the entire area has to be isolated and insulated from everything nearby. The insulation includes barricades to the perimeter around the construction site, placing of mesh as high as possible to reduce the chance of injuries to passersby and neighbou, ring buildings, the actual demolition of the wooden structure, the removal of all the materials from the demolished structure, the excavation and removal of foundation overburden and site preparation.
As a body we the P.T.A, who has as part of our membership Dr. Clifton Inniss PhD (one of the country’s leading structural engineers) together with the board headed by qualified civil engineer Kenrick Thomas of KP THOMAS & SONS, Civil Engineering Contractors met with the consultants and were briefed in detail on all facets of the demolition and re- construction of this building.
Our estimation is within the range of $25 million to $30 million. To digest that a man who didn’t see these documents or don’t have a clue of the expertise required to undertake this venture, but pronouncing and creating mischief so that professionals will look bad, is difficult.
While every Guyanese thinks to save a dollar, compromising quality work at the students’ expense is poor thinking.
Over the years we have seen contractors under bid, only to come back for two and three supplementary additions to the contracts knowing from the inception the sum they put forward would have never done the job.
I am placing on record an appeal to the chairman N.P.TA.B; Mr. Marcel Hudson – Chief Education Officer, the government assigned engineer and all relevant parties concerned, as the parents’ representative, we are fully aware of the scope of work to be undertaken and would like adequate funds to be allocated so that the estimated one year construction and hand over deadline can be met, and we are fully in support and thankful to the government of the day for finally ensuring that this project is a reality.
Ronald Shepherd
