The recently donated vehicles that were given to the Guyana Police Force by the government of China will hit the streets today.
According to a media statement sent by the Force, the first part of the donation will be “rolled out” from the Tactical Services Unit Drill
Square, for the various policing divisions.
Acting Commissioner of Police, David Ramnarine said the force’s anti-crime plans will be bolstered with the patrol of these vehicles on the streets.
Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken previously noted while training sessions were in full swing for the officers last week, with the addition of vehicles to the force, there will be a greater response by the Force to criminal reports.
Hicken said that these vehicles will add to the efficiency of the force to not only respond to reports, but also conduct patrols in the areas more prone to criminal activities.
Additionally, he pointed out that he hopes they can also help to rebuild their relationship and trust with the general public, given that members of the Police Force will become more efficient in responding to 911 calls which cover over 52 stations.
The assistant commissioner added, “We expect also that the populace will be satisfactorily policed, given the resources we have…We are going to allocate (the vehicles) adequately to the divisions so that they can look at the housing, busy areas, shopping malls and crime prone areas”.
Prior to the distribution of the vehicles, a two-day training exercise was convened by a Chinese technical training officer, HouJian, who conducted informative sessions with officers on how to use and maintain the vehicles, valued at US $2.6 million.
Last month, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) detailed its Christmas security plan for Georgetown while other divisions have separately promised more beat patrol ranks, greater focus on high-risk areas of the community and traffic management systems.
Ramnarine had told Kaieteur News that the force’s Christmas plans remain on track.
“It [the plans] will be better as soon as we are able to deploy… in a couple of days when this huge number of vehicles, in particular, are out.
The donation that was made by the government of China last month included 56 pickups, 35 All-Terrain-Vehicles (ATVs), three 21-seater buses, 44 motor cycles, 100 bullet proof vests, helmets and riot shields, 10 tactical ladders, 200 police flak jackets, 20 bulletproof shields, 20 anti-riot suits, 30 laptops, 40 desktop computers, 10 copy machines, 30 sound lever meters, 5 diesel generators, several spare parts and battery backups.
The vehicles and other equipment are expected to be used in the transportation, traffic and communication sectors of the force.
