Dec 02, 2017 Letters
DEAR EDITOR,
We the Guyanese people have gotten no apologies from President Granger for wasting tens of millions of dollars on transforming a white State House (a national treasure) into Granger’s Green House, while he at the same time has the gall to issue Granger’s Green Letters to hundreds of sugar workers in the Lower Corentyne/East Bank Berbice area (Canje to New Amsterdam).
I am now questioning the sincerity of this President’s action. Millions of dollars are spent on international flights to worthless conferences such as a mercury conference in Switzerland, and staying at the most expensive hotels, while at the same time taking away the dignity of hundreds of ordinary workers by sending them on the breadline.
A caring and compassionate leader would have cut his own cost and used that money to offer a temporary extension to the work life of these workers going home for Christmas 2017. What Mr. Granger has done was make Christmas 2017 into one of the darkest for over 3,000 people in the Berbice area.
At a minimum, Mr. Granger has now established his reputation as one populated by inappropriate and poor decision-making. Not only are the members of his own party pondering on this executive wildness, but also the entire PNC-dominant coalition is at grave risk. Please do not misread my letter, this is not a security issue; it is a political one, and the local government elections will establish where they are political in rural Guyana.
What I am seeing here are actions by Mr. Granger that have brought great harm to the Guyanese economy. He must understand his role; he is a President for goodness sake, not someone who should be obsessed with his own vanity and self-aggrandizement. Sometimes when I measure these presidential actions, I wonder if, in addition to aloofness, this is nothing more than plain old hate for rural Guyana.
This President’s policy goals lack depth, breadth, and wisdom. There is abundant selfishness. What would our citizens prefer: a fancy, green state house or a vibrant economy? It is time for Mr. Granger to get off his rocking chair and do something tangible for the people of Guyana.
