–after accident which left 14 school children injured
After six months, 28-year-old bus driver Alpha Felix, who was charged with dangerous driving in relation to an accident along the West Coast Berbice Public Road, which left 14 school children injured, was on Monday cleared of the charge by Magistrate Rhondell Weever at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court.
The injured children ranged in age from three to nine years old.
Felix, of Weldaad, West Coast Berbice, was slapped with the offence days after the accident involving three minibuses at Rising Sun, West Coast Berbice.
Felix, who had been released on $50,000 bail pending trial, walked out of court a free man after the Magistrate found that there was insufficient evidence to convict him. His driver’s licence had also been suspended pending the outcome of the matter.
Three route 50 minibuses – BHH 5558, BTT 2426 and BNN 8359 – were involved in the collision.
According to the police, BHH 5558 was transporting Primary and pre-school children at the time.
At the time of the accident, all three of the buses were proceeding west along the Rising Sun Public Road with BHH 5558 ahead, followed by BNN 8359 and BTT 2426.
It was reported that BNN 8359 was in the process of overtaking BTT 2426, being driven by Felix, when he observed that another vehicle was approaching in the lane. But as the driver of BNN 8359, attempted to reduce acceleration, his vehicle collided with the other two buses which toppled.
“The minibus attempting to overtake came into contact with the front right side of the vehicle being overtaken. The impact caused the overtaking minibus to topple onto its side. It skidded and came into contact with the parked school bus. The school bus with children in it, also toppled and skidded off the parapet,” a police official had explained.
