DEAR EDITOR,
With reference to your article, Guyana Goldfields Inc. denies letting go of 80 employees in which the HR Manager has come out in denying the allegations made.
I am amazed that the Ministry of Labour has not launched a thorough investigation as to the wrongdoing of the said company against Guyanese workers. It must be noted that this not the first time that such allegations were levelled against the company.
I will support the claim made by employees, that long serving employees, especially some who would have been with the company since the exploration phase, were never given permanent status and were sent home at the first opportunity.
These employees do not have any justification in arguing their cases as they were contractual employees and when they do approach the Ministry of Labour, once company officials refute their allegations, the matter is laid to rest.
It is a known fact that employees working within the company are scared of victimization as they are reminded that “there are thousands of applicants waiting to take your place”.
I call on the relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Labour, Guyana Trades Union Congress, or any Workers’ Union that has the interest of Guyanese workers at heart, to seriously take these employees’ complaints and launch a proper investigation into the aforementioned issue.
