Several persons who expressed concern over the conditions under which a calf is being kept at the Number 51 Police Station are eagerly awaiting word of what will happen to the animal.
Divisional Commander Lindon Alves told this publication that a file that was sent for advice to the DPP, and had returned had to be forwarded to the Ministry of Public Security where a decision will be made.
He said, “I am currently awaiting instructions from the Ministry of Public Security on what to do with the animal. The file has since been forwarded to the Ministry.”
Leila Hazell-Bhudial, a concerned citizen had stated in mid-September, that a car was involved in an accident with the calf. A mirror on the car was broken and the animal suffered a broken back leg. The animal has been left without food and shelter while tied to a concrete stump in the station yard.
Hazell-Bhudial disclosed that initially she and a colleague even visited the former Police Commander, Paul Williams, over this issue.
”He had promised to release the calf the next day but unfortunately, he was transferred the same day and Mr. Lyndon Alves has since taken over.”
Concerned citizens, including a rice miller, even donated a quantity of feed and a bucket. However, according to Hazell-Bhudial, checks by residents found that on many days, there was no evidence of the animal being fed. The feed and bucket appears to have been stolen.
The residents even sought the help of animal rights activist, Syeada Manbodh, who made checks to inquire why the animal was being kept for such a long period.
Persons complained to the Guyana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA). A veterinarian who visited Berbice to conduct checks on animals also visited the police station to inspect the animal.
“They went in the police station seeking permission from the CID woman (name given) but she refused to let them see the calf and administer drugs.”
Hazell-Bhudial claimed that the police woman said that a senior cop had ordered that the vet was not to see the calf.
