The Volleyball Teams of the Port Mourant Training Center (PMTC) took the top two spots when the fifth edition of the Balram Shane Senior Inter Club Volleyball Competition was played on Sunday.
The one day competition was organised by the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) and played at the Albion Community Center. Eight males and two female teams participated in the competition.
The male teams were PMTC1, PMTC2, Rollers of New Amsterdam, GTCPM 1, GTCPM2, Port Mourant Jaguars, Police Recruits and Corriverton Jets.
The female teams were Port Mourant Females and Corriverton Jets.
The male teams were placed into two groups with the top two in one group emerging to play the top two in the other group. After some competitive volleyball in the group stages it was Port Mourant Jaguars and Corriverton Jets that emerged from group one.
While PMTC1 and PMTC 2 emerged as the top two teams from group two.
In the semifinal matches PMTC 2 defeated Port Mourant Jaguars 30- 23 in a close encounter, while PMTC1 whipped Corriverton Jets 30-16 to book their place in the final.
The final saw PMTC2 getting the better of PMTC1 30-21 to take first place. The outstanding players were Paul Welcome and Marcellos Hector of PMTC2.
In the female encounter, the Port Mourant females defeated Corriverton Jets by a 2-0 margin, the scores being 25-19, 25-21.
The outstanding female players on show were best spiker Candacy Mentore, best setter Amisha Persaud, while Chrystal Paddy took the MVP award.
The top teams and outstanding individual players were presented with cash incentives and trophies compliments of Mr. Deonarine Balram and family of the Balram Shane General Store Rose Hall Town. Gregory Rambarran presented trophies to the top female players.
Mr Balram took the opportunity to congratulate the teams that participated in the competition, the sponsors, supporters and all others who over the years have made the tournament possible and the success it has been. (Samuel Whyte)
