DEAR EDITOR,
Residents of Port Kaituma, Matarkai sub-region, region 1 (Barima-Waini) are alleging that a Member of Parliament (MP) is authorizing residents to take sand from the Four Miles Amerindian titled village without the permission of the village council.
If true, the MP must know that this is unlawful and a violation of the Amerindian Act 2006. For any MP to be doing such an illegality is an embarrassment to parliamentarians, and that individual should be asked by the people of Guyana to submit their resignation or be put before the police.
The residents of Four Miles have alleged that the MP and an associate are forcefully trying to form a Community Development Council (CDC) in the village and the people strongly opposed.
The regional chairman was contacted on this matter, and it was stated that the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) would not recognize any CDC formed in Four Miles. This is very good to hear.
The Minister of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs Sydney Allicock should make a similar comment, but we are not hearing from him.
Residents have also alleged that another official is engaged in the marking off of house lots. This is also an illegal and corrupt act. When contact was made with this individual, it was emphasised that he is authorized by the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC), his employer.
If this is so, then the GLSC may be engaged in an illegal act which must be immediately stopped. Residents have alleged that when land plots are marked off for a fee, others are claiming the said land plots.
I am respectfully calling on GLSC Commissioner Mr. Trevor Benn to launch urgent investigations into this matter by consulting with the aggrieved residents of Port Kaituma and to apply corrective actions where necessary.
