Dear Editor,
With the controversial decision of President David Granger of the APNU+AFC Government to go-it-alone and unilaterally select Justice James Patterson as Chairman of GECOM, one is left to ponder if the Government is listening to anyone other than its supporters? Hence, is it governing in the best interest of all Guyanese or just pandering to their supporters?
There is still time for President David Granger to act democratically and rescind this controversial selection. This will then create a Golden Opportunity for the governing APNU+AFC and the main Opposition PPP/C to work together in selecting a new non-partisan Chairman for GECOM.
Such small moves by both the government and the main Opposition will augur well for Guyanese as oppose to the continued rancour derived from the “one-upmanship” (or, who-pon-top) gamesmanship.
Hence, I would like to take this opportunity to promote Consensus Politics whereby we work together on issues of National Importance for the betterment of all Guyanese. By doing so, we will be building Trust, Mutual Understanding and Mutual Respect.
It is time for politicians to compromise as opposed to trying to outdo each other. In Guyana, compromise seems to be a bad word as no politician wants to be seen as flip-flopping on issues.
It is up to President David Granger to act democratically and lead the way as opposed to being led by his supporters.
Sean Ori
