Former Junior Minister of Agriculture, Ali Baksh, 70, has died after ailing for a while.
The former minister, died peacefully at his Cotton Field, Essequibo Coast residence, with his family around him, shortly after midday yesterday.
He had been suffering heart and other ailments.
Baksh was sworn in as a member of the team of former President Donald Ramotar following the 2011 General elections.
According to the Women’s Progressive Organisation (WPO), the women’s arm of the Opposition’s People’s Progressive Party, Baksh was surrounded by family when he passed away around 13:00hrs.
“He was a son of this soil, a stalwart, a revolutionary, a dedicated member of the People’s Progressive Party and someone who is loved by most he was in contact with.”
WPO said that he will go down in history as the one who spearheaded the structural, social and economic developments on the Essequibo Coast.
The funeral will be held tomorrow with viewing from 12:00 hours at the official’s residence.
Meanwhile, the PPP in expressing its regrets at the passing of one of its stalwarts, said that Baksh in addition to being the former Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture, was also a former Regional Chairman of Region Two and Executive Member of the PPP.
He served as Region Two’s chairman for 19 years, his daughter, Arifa, told Kaieteur News.
Baksh was the father of three, including Azeena Baksh, the former Registrar of Deeds.
PPP said that Baksh will be remembered for his contribution towards the struggle for the restoration of democracy and national development. He was reportedly beaten and arrested during his early days in politics.
