A shotgun was found in a pond in the compound of an abandoned rice mill at Number 63 Village, Corentyne, yesterday. The discovery was made some time around midday.
Kaieteur News understands that a livestock farmer was grazing his animals in the compound and while passing a shallow pond he glanced inside and saw the gun. The water in the pond had receded overtime.
The man who is said to be living nearby immediately informed other residents and subsequently contacted the police.
Police after receiving the information ventured to the scene and retrieved the firearm. A source told this newspaper that it appears that the gun would have been in the pond for a very “long time” now.
According to the source, the gun will be sent for ballistic testing but is not likely that much will come out of it since the gun was in immediate contact with the water for a long period of time.
The compound houses a rice mill and a pond. The owner of the property had reportedly migrated overseas a few years ago and would visit when he returns to the country. A resident told this publication that before the rice mill was closed the water in the pond was used for the boilers to steam paddy.
Police are investigating.
