A man who was caught with a bag containing a quantity of marijuana in a car whilst on his way to Georgetown, has been jailed for three years on a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. He was also fined $31,000.
Steven Gomes, 27, a labourer of 13 Strand, New Amsterdam, Berbice, was handed the penalty by Magistrate Rhondell Weever at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court.
Police Prosecutor Corporal Rochelle Mars told the court that on May 5, last, the police were conducting stop and search exercise at a road block on the Foulis Public Road West Coast Berbice.
They stopped motor car HC 7077 which was heading in the direction of Georgetown with the driver and four passengers, including a policeman inside. Gomes was one of the passengers in the vehicle.
The passengers were ordered to exit the vehicle for a routine search. After all the passengers exited the vehicle a blue haversack was left in the car. No one claimed ownership of the bag. The haversack was checked and contained what seemed to be leaves, seeds and stems of marijuana.
The man had denied ownership of the bag .The other passengers including the policeman and driver however stated that Gomes is the owner of the bag and had it in his possession all the time.
The items were tested and weighed and found to be 354grams of compressed marijuana.
He was placed in custody and subsequently charged.
