Guyanese products a hit at Latin American, Caribbean flavours Expo
A contingent from the Guyana Office for Investment (Go-Invest) along with several local businesses recently held a successful exhibition of some of the country’s most sterling products in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The attendees representing Guyana included Sharon Sue-Hang Baksh and Vasudeo Singh of Demerara Distillers Limited, Ruth Autar of Edward Beharry Company Limited and Kibbyann Chester-Harding of Go-Invest.
Go-Invest noted that the ninth edition of the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) Flavors Exhibition was organised by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Argentine Investment and Trade Promotion Agency (AAICI), the Ministry of Agribusiness of Argentina and the ExponenciAR Group (Clarín and La Nación), in addition to 24 other export promotion agencies.
The event saw more than 120 buyers from around the world having business discussions with over 500 businesses. More than 3,000 one-on-one, 30-minute appointments were conducted during the two-day event which was held earlier this month.
During the opening ceremony, the Chief of the IDB’s Trade and Investment Division, Fabrizo Opertti indicated that once again, LAC Flavors positioned the supply of value-added foods from Latin America and the Caribbean to the rest of the world, proving that it is crucial to innovate with certifications, quality brands and technology to export foods.
Go-Invest stated that the event also afforded participants the opportunity to technical sessions which included presentations on “Understanding the buyers: What characteristics do they seek in a supplier” and “Creating secure logistics chain through the Authorised Economic Operator certification.”
LAC Flavors 2018 will be held in Chile according to an announcement made during the closing of the event.
On November 9 and 10, Go-Invest noted that Expo AlimentAR was held. This inaugural expo in Argentina was coordinated by ExponenciAR Group. Go-Invest said that Guyana was represented by Edward Beharry Company Limited and Demerara Distillers Limited. Products were on display by these companies as well as Banks DIH Limited, Tandy’s Manufacturing, Umami Limited and Hakh Group of Companies.
Go-Invest noted that its goals were to network with other trade promotion agencies in Latin America and to promote products made in Guyana (Rum, Beer, Spices, confectioneries and rice) to the Latin American market.
As it relates to achievements from that trade show, Go-Invest said that three importers out of Peru, India and Argentina expressed interest in buying rice from Guyana. The company from India, Axom Global-Trade PVT Ltd, has distribution companies in Canada, Dubai, Nigeria and India and has expressed the need for 4% broken rice from Guyana.
The entity said, too, that over 12 importers and distributors showed interest in the rum manufactured by Banks DIH Limited and Demerara Distillers Limited. Demerara Distillers Limited was able to secure nine Business to Business meetings during the first two days of the four days event.
Furthermore, importers out of Norway and Argentina expressed interest in purchasing beer from Banks DIH Limited. A company from Argentina, Carhugo S.R.L, was marketing a beer dispenser with the hope that Banks DIH will see the need for it to be used in their restaurants.
Go-Invest noted that Edward Beharry Company Limited’s representative was able to make contact with a number of distributors and importers from across Latin America. The products were well received especially the curry powder and sweets. They were also able to source raw material for their products.
