No upsets were witnessed on Tuesday evening as the first two quarterfinal matches of the Turbo Knockout football tournament were played at the Ministry of Education (MOE) ground on CARIFESTA Avenue with favourites Police FC and Grove Hi-Tech qualifying for the semi-finals.
Police FC have been the top team in the Georgetown Football Association of recent and they continued they unbeaten streak after needling Kuru Kuru Warriors 1-0. Rawle Haynes scored the solitary strike of the eliminator in the 40th minute after receiving a cross inside the box which he converted expertly.
In the second half, Warriors were awarded a penalty in the 67th minute but the East Bank based unit failed to convert the spot kick which allowed Police FC hold on for a gritty 1-0 win.
In the second quarter-final of the night, East Bank’s Grove Hi-Tech made little mistakes against city side Pele FC in their 3-1 triumph. The victory charge was led by Hi-Tech’s talisman Domini Garnett who scored a brace.
The former National youth player opened the scoring and finished it with successful attempts on goal in the seventh and 59th minutes.
After Denzil Crawford had doubled Grove’s lead in the 27th minute, Akosi Jarvis scored in the 40th minute to pull one back for Pele and kept their hopes alive before a Garnett’s second goal, a curling free kick, snuffed out any hopes of a comeback.
The remaining quarterfinals will kick off tonight at the same venue.
At 18:30hrs, Silver Shattas of Linden, will square off with Camptown, while the feature contest will pit Pouderoyen against Mahaica Determinators from 21:00hrs.
The champions of this Turbo Knockout football tournament being co-ordinated by Petra will pocket $500,000 and the championship trophy, while the runners-up will purse $250,000.
Third and fourth place finishers will walk away with $125,000 and $75,000 apiece and the respective trophies.
The other teams that have been eliminated from the 16-team championship so far are Eagles, Northern Rangers, GFC, Santos, Uitvlugt and Riddim Squad.
