A taxi-driver who allegedly pointed a gun at a man and robbed him of his gold chain, was on Wednesday remanded to prison after he made an appearance in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Quincy Abrams, 31, of Bagotville, West Bank Demerara, appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore and denied the charge which alleged that on October 29, at West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, while being in the company of others and armed with a gun he robbed Redrick Bowman of a gold chain worth $170,000.
Police Prosecutor Simone Payne opposed bail being granted to the unrepresented defendant citing the serious nature of the offence and the fact that a gun was used to commit the offence.
According to reports, Bowman was walking in the West Ruimveldt area when he was approached by a group of men who held him at gunpoint and told him to hand over his valuables.
Being fearful for his life, Bowman handed over his gold chain and the attackers then made good their escape.
The Prosecutor’s objection was upheld by the Magistrate and the defendant was remanded to prison. The father of three was instructed to make his next court appearance on November 27.
Also before the same magistrate, a labourer was remanded to prison for allegedly snatching two cellular phones.
Eighteen-year-old Junior Lewis, of Pike Street, Kitty, denied the charge which alleged that on November 4 at Kingston, Georgetown, while armed with a cutlass he robbed Davina Persaud of one Samsung phone.
It was further alleged that on the same day in question, while being armed with a cutlass he robbed Vishal Mohan of a cellular phone.
The Prosecutor objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature and prevalence of the offence. The magistrate remanded the defendant until December 6.
