Dear Editor,
The Canadian Chapter of the People National Congress Reform (PNCR) operating out of central Toronto, hereby gives our wholehearted and united support to President David Granger in his selection of Justice Patterson for the post of Chairman of GECOM.
The President’s decisive action to fill the GECOM position was fit, proper and lawfully done by the authority vested in him under the constitution.
We noticed that opposing forces in Guyana were displeased with the President’s decision, but we quickly recognized that the opposing forces were being emotional and not basing their reactions on facts. However, the fact is that the Canadian and our related American Chapters of the PNCR wish to share the following valuable information with the Guyanese public.
The constitution actually predicted the exact scenario if a President was faced with having to make a unilateral decision to pick a GECOM Chairman. The constitution totally allows the President to select his own appointee as GECOM chairman if he disagreed with the people recommended for the position.
It was made clear when a letter from another PNCR North American Chapter pointed out that there is nothing in the constitution preventing a future opposition leader from submitting list after list of only murderers and bank robbers to be nominated as GECOM Chairman.
As our sister PNCR Chapter pointed out, what if the constitution demanded that the President had to only select someone from the list? That would mean that a future GECOM Chairman could be a murderer or bank robber or worse.
Fortunately, the constitution does not demand that the President choose exclusively from a list submitted to him. Because of that, we can all be assured that Guyana will never have a murderer, bank robber, etc, as a GECOM Chairman. So, in the end there is no blame to pass around to any politician in any party, because it is the constitution that has set the laws.
Anger, displeasure and protest will not solve it. The GECOM Chairman appointment stands and the constitution will outlive us all, just to protect us all. I will suggest that the entire country should be consulted in a referendum for majority approval of the people before any politician brings new ink to scribe on that sacred paper that protects our nation.
Sincerely,
Alan Zaakir
Organizer of the PNCR Central Toronto Chapter
