Dear Editor,
So much has been written about the illegality of random checks done by police on vehicle owners yet this doesn’t seem to be in the training manuals at the police training schools. Or is it purely human nature to hassle others when you are in a position to do so?
Two groups of police ranks seem to have found a safe zone aback of Providence; the road from the dump site via Winsor Estate to Mocha, to hassle vehicle owners for documents in the late evening.
These guys have the most endearing approach.
“Good evening sir, documents, please!” Upon collecting the documents, the next question is. “Whey you wukking?”
If your answer is Ansa McAl, the next question is, Wha wuk you doing deh?”-all the while examining your documents.
I figure their line of questioning is to decide how much you should pay if your documents are not in order. These guys are not our ordinary traffic cops in white sleeves. They are cops with bullet proof vests and heavily armed–they are intimidating.
If your documents are in order you can get an, “Enjoy the rest of the evening!” While your papers are handed back to you! If they (documents) are not, your ordeal has just begun. It begins like this,”Sir we have to take you to the Providence Police Station.”The infringement is then cited to you. Now you have to speak–not you, your pocket. They already know where you work so don’t offer a measly $500 or you are going to hear, “Are you trying to bribe the police?”
You have to shoot (pay up) or risk being taken to the station for further booking. This is the service and protection we get from the police.
