Dear Editor,
The Minister of Indigenous Peoples Affairs has once again disappointed the villagers of Parikwaranau in South-Central Rupununi.
The Minister was scheduled to visit the village on Saturday, 21st October for a meeting with villagers to address a land issue where a Rancher had fenced off a portion of Parikwaranau’s Village lands claiming ownership.
But while the villagers were prepared to meet Minister Sydney Allicock, he never showed on the claim that he learnt that the village would be taking legal action on their land issue.
The villagers were disappointed and it is being alleged that the Minister may not be competent to deal with Indigenous peoples affairs.
But it is my humble opinion that even though the Minister has learnt that the village would be taking litigation on their land issue whether true or false, he still should have visited the village as matter of interest to see if he can bring resolution to the land issue as the responsible Minister of Indigenous Peoples Affairs because the villagers were prepared to meet with him.
Parikwaranau Village, it seems, is now on its own where its land issue is concerned. But is this reason why it has been alleged by Amerindian villagers that Minister Allicock is only providing greater focus on the Annai District?
The National Toshao Council (NTC) needs to take note and act.
Yours sincerely,
Peter Persaud
