Digicel Guyana yesterday commissioned its tallest tower at Coomacka, commonly called ‘The Mines’, a small village in the mining town of Linden.
Residents now have access to mobile phone service from the 462-foot tower located in the heart of the community.
Chief Executive Officer of Digicel, Gregory Dean, underscored the company’s contributions to propel Guyana into the mobile communication era.
Dean said that the tower was erected in the community to relieve residents of issues with accessing the internet. He explained that the height of the tower will enable surrounding communities to access signal.
He noted that the site has been optimized and further improvements will be conducted in the coming weeks to improve data signal.
Telecommunication Minister, Cathy Hughes, expressed gratitude to Digicel for including members of the community in the commissioning.
She added that Digicel has become a very important partner in Government’s aggressive programme to make the country Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capable.
Guyana is on its way to being counted amongst the developing countries where telecommunication will play a very big role, she said.
“More importantly everything that our communication providers like, Digicel does.
Every tower they put up and every cell site they establish, represents another step in the right direction.”
The Minister said that the cell service providers and the internet service providers are determined to reach everyone utilising information and communication technology.
She further added that some communities are learning very fast to use the many internet platforms.
“The residents will soon get great cell phone receptions and most of all, the possibility of strong reliable internet connectivity,” the Minster added.
According to Hughes, the Ministry of Public Telecommunication has so far installed free WiFi equipment in 93 secondary schools across the country. The students and teachers now have access to free internet in their computer labs and staffrooms.
She added that special programmes will be launched soon for primary schools countrywide; equipping students with computer tablets which will be used in the classrooms.
She added that they have commissioned over 56 community ICT hubs along the coastland and hinterland areas.
She noted that the partnership with Digicel and other companies gives the people the ability to move and provide services in more areas.
Not forgetting the mothers and fathers and early school leavers, the Minister said that free internet is an inducement for them so that they can surf the web.
“You must use it to find out what business opportunities may lay in store for you.”
She urged the residents to be creative with fruits and vegetables that are in their community which they can sell online.
She said that Facebook is an easy way to attract people so the products will sell faster since a wider range of people will get the opportunity to see it.
Most importantly, she said, they should use online for training and entrepreneurial opportunities.
The minister said that her government is ready to work hand in hand with the residents of Coomacka and ICT hubs to provide free internet access to the people.
