Dear Editor,
I wish to compliment the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region One (Barima- Waini) for making a sound decision to stop the mayor of Mabaruma from arbitrarily and dictatorially remove poor Amerindian residents from Khan Hill to make way for a dump site.
Amerindians have been living on Khan Hill for over ten years and they all have their farms and houses. It was alleged at a recent meeting with the residents at his office the mayor told them to “get out of his town and go back where you come from.”
I do not think this is the way a mayor of a town should speak to its residents. It is sad that the Mabaruma mayor lacks common courtesies. Police officer Williams of the Mabaruma police station on Sunday the 15th October, 2017 physically assaulted Patrick Gonsalves of the Barimanobo community. Gonsalves’s jaw was broken. He had to be air-lifted to the Georgetown Public Hospital. This police officer is currently at the police station as though nothing happened. He needs to be prosecuted.
It is alleged by residents of the community that Patrick Gonsalves did not offend the police officer who was in the community.
Can the Ministries of Public Infrastructure and Communities say if they are funding the construction of a road from Baramita village to the Venezuelan Border? The road is in its construction phase by a Brazilian.
Can his Excellency the President intervene in the interest of National Security?
