Without a hitch: Management of the Demerara Harbour Bridge said that a major project to replace a pontoon under the retractor span went without a hitch yesterday. The 40-year-old structure was closed for at least seven hours for a delicate operation which involved over 50 staffers.
The bridge is currently closed to marine traffic and tests will continue to be conducted today and tomorrow before normal operations resume Tuesday, General Manager, Rawlston Adams explained.
This is the second pontoon to be replaced under the critical retractor span area, in months, under a project that costs the bridge management over $100M. The bridge is a critical link between the city, West Demerara and Essequibo.
