Dear Editor,
I am often amused of the rambling of some of our writers to the press. In the news of October 26, I read of Lincoln Lewis lambasting Anil Nandlall for reporting on the sole selection and speedy swearing in of Justice Patterson as Chairman of the Elections Commission.
I am in no position to defend Mr. Nandlall; he is capable of doing that himself. What I am intrigued about is that Mr. Lewis is attacking the former Attorney General because he stated the facts.
Mr. Lewis quoted from Mr. Nandlall as follows, “he (Patterson) was a pallbearer at Desmond Hoyte’s funeral, is a member of a PNC Facebook group.” He then went on to educate us on Article 147 of our constitution.
Well, Mr. Lewis, it appears that you may have a very short memory. It was not Nandlall reporting the facts; it was the President himself who clearly stated what should be the qualification of the person to be “not unacceptable.”
The President stated that the person he is looking for should “not” be a member of a political party. Maybe I misunderstood the President, but why was Justice Patterson a pallbearer at President Hoyte’s funeral? Who were the other pallbearers? Were they members of the PNC?
We all go to funerals, and I am sure you know that persons who are closely aligned to the deceased are generally the pallbearers. What relationship Justice Patterson had with President Hoyte? Was he a member of the PNC? The other question Mr. Lewis and President Granger should answer is “why is Justice Patterson a member of the PNC facebook page?”
I would be intrigued to know what his comments on the page were over the years he has been a member.
The fact is President Granger is very devious and deceptive in the execution of his duties as President. His Government stated in very clear terms that there is an age limit for anyone to serve in constitutional bodies.
He went against his own policy and appointed an 84-year-old great grand-father to not only serve in, but to head a very demanding Commission. The President also stated that the person should not be a member of any political party.
What I have observed so far is not good. All of Guyana remembers that the President demoted Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine on the death anniversary of Dr. Walter Rodney. Was that a co-incidence?
All Guyanese need to wake up. We have slumbered for too long to the excessiveness of the PNC government, the PPP government, and now we see the same pattern of the APNU/AFC government.
Are we going to allow this government to take us along the same path of the previous governments? It’s our choice to make. As God told Job, “stand up like a man and answer me.”
