A Linden taxi-driver who was allegedly transporting a passenger to Linden when he was busted with over 16 pounds of marijuana hidden in compartments and in the trunk of the vehicle, yesterday got the matter against him dismissed.
Glenmore Mc Bean, also known as ‘Small Man’ ,34, a taxi driver, of Lot 78 Wismar Housing Scheme, Linden denied the allegation that on July 16, last, at Soesdyke Junction, East Bank Demerara, he had 7.388 kilograms of cannabis sativa (marijuana) for the purpose of trafficking.
He was intercepted by ranks from the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU).
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan dismissed the matter against the taxi- driver on the grounds that the evidence by the prosecution witness was discredited. She added that the witnesses told different versions of what transpired. She added that most of the prosecution witnesses changed their evidence under cross examination.
The court heard that in one instance a police photographer admitted that he withheld some of the photographs that he took at the scene when he was grilled by defence council under cross examination.
Magistrate McLennan said that the court was left in doubt after the police witnesses gave conflicting evidence throughout the trial. For that reason Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) Prosecutor; Konyo Sandiford, was unable to prove her case beyond reasonable doubt.
The magistrate, therefore, upheld the no case submission which was made by defence attorney, Glenn Hanoman.
According to reports, ranks from CANU received certain information at Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, and as a result set up a road block at Soesdyke Junction, East Bank Demerara.
There they stopped motorcar, HC 7963 which was being driven by Mc Bean. Upon searching the vehicle the prosecutor said that ranks found parcels of marijuana hidden in a compartment.
