Dear Editor,
Norway is correct in rejecting the request for the release of the US$80 million to support this so-called “Green State Plan” as is being pushed by President Granger as an alternative to the implementable Low-Carbon Development Strategy which has now been parked. Norway is correct in rejecting this appeal for the release of this money because if the government spokesperson on all matters does not understand what is clean and unclean energy then we got a problem. Mr. Harmon was quoted in the local press on October 1, 2017, as saying that “natural gas is clean energy”.
Has the Granger regime gone bonkers? Natural gas is unclean energy and this is not a matter of an opinion, this has been scientifically proven? Natural gas is mostly made of methane, which is around 70% of a greenhouse gas as compared to carbon dioxide. Does Mr. Harmon think he is speaking to a packed room of political sycophants in Congress Place? It is insane to make such a ludicrous statement that “natural gas is clean energy” and expect the Norwegians to bite. Quite rightly in more diplomatic words, they told him to “haul his behind”.
Let us think about this. What is the degree that Mr. Harmon possesses vs. the person across the table from Norway? We have an ordinary lawyer who before his elevation to one of the highest position in government was not the best read in the law locally and was hustling on South Road defending a traffic law violator here and a “fowl” thief there and so forth. You get the picture.
Harmon’s Norwegian counterpart across the table might have been pouched from one of the best Environmental Schools in Europe and has researched this topic for years. Can you imagine Mr. Harmon telling these people that natural gas is clean? What a joke! Mr. Harmon has reduced Guyana to a laughing stock. This situation reminds me of the now-deposed Gambian despot Yahya Jammeh, who claimed that he had a homeopathic cure for HIV-AIDS, but what the scientist proved is that this man was more of a con-artist compared to Haiti’s very own Papa Doc Duvalier.
Get real Mr. Harmon and stop embarrassing our country! For the record, we must reject this ludicrous statement attributed to Minister Joe Harmon that was published in the local media and captioned as “Natural gas flares up as a hurdle in tapping Norway’s US$80 million”. There is no flare up; it is well-schooled people rejecting an asinine position from a very unschooled person in the field of climate change. But what is of importance, all of a sudden, environmental advocates like Racquel Thomas and Janet Bulkan have gone dead silent. Is there some form of hypocrisy at play here?
