The newly formed Savannah Boxing Gym (SBG), which was formed after Minister of Social Cohesion
Dr. George Norton sent Coach Orland Rogers to Region Nine as part of a sport decentralizing programme, will be represented this weekend when the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) stages it Lennox Blackmoore National Intermediate competition this weekend.
SBG will join reigning champions the Guyana Defence Force, Young Achievers’, Forgotten Youth Foundation, Guyana Police Force, Harpy Eagles, Vergenoegen Boxing Gym (Formerly Essequibo) Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym, Rose Hall Jammers and the Republican Boxing Gym.
The National Intermediate will run from Friday to Sunday at the National Gymnasium and the weigh-in will be done today at the event’s venue from 5pm.
Tournament co-coordinator, Terrence Poole, explained to Kaieteur Sport the no-nonsense approach to athletes who do not show up for the procedure. “It’s an amateur event and many persons look to do their own thing but once a fighter does not show up for the weigh-in, they will not be able to participate in their respective bouts, under no circumstance”, stated Poole, the GDF boxing coach. Poole also welcomed the Region Nine Gym and also encouraged fans to come out and support the young pugilists.
This amateur boxing event will have 12 bouts each night in the Youth, Elite and Female categories and admission to the venue is an easy $500 on each night. Some of the top fighters that will be on show include GDF’s Akimo Watts (Junior Flyweight Champion), Kevin Moore (Bantamweight Champion), Okimey Baker (Middleweight Champion) and Jirl Peters (Light Heavyweight) champion. New kid on the block Suebia Roberts of the Savannah Gym will also look to make her mark.
