Dear Editor,
I hear some folks talk about Carter agreement and some tradition and norms on the selection of the GECOM chairman. Any arrangements, agreements, compromise, or accord that violates the constitution is illegal. Enough of all forms of unconstitutionalities that have pervaded our system for too long! The Opposition Leader has obeyed the constitution. The president has also done what the law requires of him to do. End of story!
What we should expend our collective energies on is devising a better process that will remove the unilateral power from the president, ensure credibility and fairness of the electoral process and push for an amendment. The constitution is clear. The President reserves the unilateral power to make this appointment regardless of any list comprising of angels, popes or saints. We cannot expect new wine from an old wine skin. It is time for constitutional reform.
