The spirit of resilience, the determination to fight and win, hope, and the need for greater awareness were all highlighted at the first ever GTT hosted Pinktober Benefit Dinner on Wednesday.
The aim of the event was to help raise funds for the work of the Guyana Cancer Foundation. It was held in the Kokomo Room at Palm Court.
Supported by the private and Government sectors, Diplomatic community and individual influencers, the event provided an opportunity for GTT Cancer Warriors to tell their stories of diagnosis, treatment, and their spirited fight.
Five of GTT Cancer Warriors, Anjuli Beharry, Marilyn Dewar, Mitzy Campbell, Rosaline Clarke, Leslie Black and Bibi Hassan were honoured at the event.
A Cancer Warrior is “someone who is fighting or has lost his or her life or the life of someone they love to Cancer.
GTT Cancer Warrior Anjuli Beharry spoke about the fears she felt when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and the decision she made to have a double mastectomy following her diagnosis.
“I felt that I will not live to see my children and grandchildren grow up”, she said. Beharry applauded GTT for the initiatives taken to raise funds which are needed to support the fight against cancer. She encouraged women to “trust your body and instinct and get screened.”
In brief remarks, GTT’s CEO, Justin Nedd said, “Together we can make a difference”, which is the theme for this year’s breast cancer awareness observances.
“GTT is doing more for Guyana through culture, community involvement and products”, said Mr. Nedd.
He expressed GTT’s pleasure in joining with the Guyana Cancer Foundation in the work that they are doing in the fight against cancer. He also expressed thanks to those who supported the purchase of tickets for the dinner since each ticket purchased could save the lives of two women and called on everyone to help raise awareness about cancer.
Also speaking at the dinner was President of the Guyana Cancer Foundation, Ms. Bibi Hassan, who said that some of what she visualised for the Guyana Cancer Foundation has begun to materialise. She said that the Foundation was able to facilitate mammogram and sonogram screening for over 100 persons in 2016. It has done work in several regions across Guyana. While her focus is on Breast and Cervical Cancer screening, Ms. Hassan said that the Foundation has plans to also begin screening for prostate cancer.
She praised GTT for partnering with the Foundation with the aim of empowering the organisation to do more for Guyana.
Well known musician, music teacher and National Awardee, Marilyn Dewar, herself a Cancer Warrior/survivor also told her story of awareness and acting on her instinct that she should be screened, her diagnosis and her decision to have a mastectomy.
Ms. Dewar displayed the Warrior spirit as she stood to relate and inspire highlights that earlier in the day, she did her fourth week of her required 25 sessions of radiation.
Pinktober is a month-long campaign that began what is hoped to be a long term relationship with the Guyana Cancer Foundation, where GTT gives an exclusive opportunity to every customer, to donate to the cause of Breast and other Cancers, and to actively participate in bringing awareness about Cancer in all its forms, but to also celebrate life and what it means to be a GTT warrior.
GTT invites the public to join in the fight through the purchase of the Pinktober Special for $2,000 dollars.
