Ms. Juliet Persico receives an award from former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Ms. Delma Nedd, for being the longest serving local CXC Registrar.
Street, Alberttown, Georgetown home yesterday. She was 75.
Persico’s demise was confirmed by her daughter, Kathryn Persico. She revealed that while her mother was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease 10 years ago, it was only a month ago that she started to develop other symptoms that warranted her hospitalisation.
“We took her twice to the hospital during the past month…We were even told she had dengue but we aren’t sure what she really developed,” the woman said of her mother’s recent hospitalisation.
Reflecting on her mother’s career, Kathryn Persico said, “She was teaching even before I was born.”
She, however, recalled that after teaching for several years, her mother became the Assistant Superintendent of Examination. Persico in 1978 was elevated to Superintendent of Examination a position that also required that she also hold the position of Local CXC Registrar. She retired from the latter position in 2010.
According to Kathryn Persico, “She was always a dedicated person and went beyond the call of duty.” She remembered her mother lending support even after retirement. “She was always there for the staff [Exams Division] whenever they called upon her,” recalled Kathryn Persico.
Persico, who was honoured with the Medal of Service in 2011, was also honoured by the Ministry of Education in 2013 for being the longest serving local CXC Registrar.
She leaves to mourn her husband, Richard, three children: Jonquil, Kathryn and Joel; three grandchildren and other family members.
